Technical SEO Checklist 2026: The Fixes That Actually Move Rankings

Technical SEO makes sure search engines and AI crawlers can find, read, and trust your pages. Get it wrong and great content never ranks, because nothing can reach it. Get it right and you remove the silent barriers holding your site back. This checklist is organised by category so you can audit quickly, and it deliberately leads with crawlability and indexing, since a beautifully optimised page that Google cannot reach or trust ranks nowhere, no matter how good the content or the Core Web Vitals score underneath it.

Run it after any migration, redesign, or platform change, since that is when a previously healthy site most often picks up a crawl or indexing problem without anyone noticing until rankings slide.

1. Crawlability

If Googlebot cannot reach a page, nothing else on this list matters for it. Crawlability problems are usually invisible in the browser, you have to check the signals crawlers actually read.

  • robots.txt allows search and AI bots and is not blocking important pages
  • An XML sitemap exists, is submitted in Search Console, and lists your key URLs
  • No important pages are blocked behind logins or unnecessary parameters
  • Internal links connect every important page (no orphan pages)
  • Server returns the right status codes (200 for live pages, 404 for missing, 301 for moved)

2. Indexing

A page can be perfectly crawlable and still fail to index if the signals around it are contradictory, a canonical tag pointing elsewhere, an accidental noindex, or a domain that redirects inconsistently between www and non-www.

  • Each page has one self-referencing canonical tag
  • Important pages are not accidentally set to noindex
  • Content is present in the HTML, not only after JavaScript runs (prerender or server-render if you use a JavaScript framework)
  • No duplicate versions of the site (pick one of www or non-www and 301 the other, consistently, so canonical tags and the redirect agree)
  • Check the Search Console Pages report for 'crawled, currently not indexed'

3. Speed and Core Web Vitals

Google measures real-world loading experience, not a lab score, and mobile is scored separately from desktop, often far worse if the site was only tested on a fast desktop connection.

  • Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) under 2.5 seconds
  • Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) under 0.1 (set width and height on images)
  • Interaction to Next Paint (INP) under 200 ms
  • Images compressed and served as WebP or AVIF, with lazy loading below the fold
  • Render-blocking scripts and fonts deferred or loaded async

4. Structured data

Structured data does not directly boost rankings, but it helps search engines and AI assistants understand and quote your content accurately, and it unlocks rich results like FAQ dropdowns and breadcrumbs in the search listing itself.

  • Organization or LocalBusiness schema on the site
  • BreadcrumbList schema for navigation
  • Article or BlogPosting schema on blog posts, and FAQPage where you have FAQs
  • Validated with Google's Rich Results Test, with no errors

5. Mobile

Google indexes the mobile version of your site first, so a desktop-only fix that never reaches the mobile template does not count. Test the actual mobile page, not a resized browser window.

  • Responsive layout with a correct viewport meta tag
  • Tap targets and font sizes comfortable on a phone
  • The mobile page shows the same content as desktop (Google indexes mobile-first)

6. Security and crawlable basics

These are foundational rather than glamorous, but a lapse in any of them can quietly undo the rest of the checklist.

  • HTTPS everywhere, with no mixed-content warnings
  • A clean URL structure: lowercase, descriptive, hyphenated, no junk parameters
  • An llms.txt file so AI crawlers understand your site and key pages
  • Firewall or bot rules do not block legitimate search and AI crawlers

Priority order: if a page cannot be crawled or indexed, speed and schema do not matter yet. Fix crawlability and indexing first, then performance, then structured data.

How often technical issues actually appear

Most established sites do not need this checklist run weekly. The moments that create technical SEO problems are predictable: a redesign that changes URL structure, a migration between hosting providers or platforms, a new domain or subdomain setup, or a plugin/app installed for an unrelated reason that quietly adds render-blocking scripts.
